Anchorage -

Here you will find Anchorage and the easy day trips
around the city. Anchorage lies in a
"bowl" and is rimmed by the Chugach Mountains on the east
and the Cook Inlet on the west. Wilderness is only
minutes away from the city, but the town is firmly linked to
civilization and the rest of the US.
Surrounded
by all the beauty and activities of Alaska, Anchorage offers
a unique blend of spectacular scenery, Russian and Native
heritage, Alaskan adventure and big city amenities...
Alaska's largest city lies between the Knik and Turnagain
arms of Cook Inlet and the rugged Chugach Mountains. It is
to more than 240,000 residents, 40 percent of the state's
population, and serves as the financial, communications and
transportation hub of Alaska. The municipal boundaries
stretch for more than 50 miles from Portage Glacier to the
head of Cook Inlet and encompase 1,955 square miles.
Anchorage is a city of contrast and variety. After a brisk
day of dogsledding, you can dine at a four-star restaurant.
The next day you can find yourself cross-country skiing the
same trails used by the U.S. Olympic team and later bed down
in a cozy bed and breakfast.
Anchorage is a great jumping off point to
a variety of attractions located outside of the city, but
there are several attractions within it as
well. Anchorage
has excellent restaurants, plenty of shopping and a great
performing arts scene. It is to the
state's biggest museum, Alaska's only zoo and a large
Native cultural center.
Because Anchorage is large and spread out, you'll need a
rental car if you plan on spending much time
here. You'll
want to spend at least one day hiking or skiing,
sightseeing and you'll need to get to your hotel as
well. Most people fly
into Anchorage via the Ted Stevens Anchorage
International Airport. This is a
beautiful airport, newly renovated, and even a train
terminal being built for more travel options. It is small
enough that can easily find your way around
it.
If you're arriving by car, only one highway connects
Anchorage to the rest of the world and that is the Glenn
Highway, otherwise known as Highway 1, which at its
southernmost points ends at the waters of beautiful r,
Alaska.
Getting around Anchorage is easy if you remember that the
mountains are to the East. Downtown the streets are based
on an old- fashioned grid system (lettered streets run north to
south, and numbered streets, east to west) and the large hotels
and gift shops are located in the northwest corner of the
town.
They do lots of
beer in Alaska. There are many local brewerys and there
is the big Alaskan Brewing Company, which makes products
like Alaskan Amber, Alaskan Pale, Alaskan Stout etc...
Moose's tooth is a great place for social gatherings or
just to unwind with friends and the beer here is the best.
At least the tap parties are incredible popular. They advertise
to be the award winning taste of frontier, so go and
taste.
