Riverboat Discovery

The Discovery belongs to the Binkley family. The family has been in the riverboat business dating back to the Klondike Gold Rush and has been an attraction in Fairbanks since 1950. The Discovery is a real stern-wheeler that carries up to 700 passengers on two to three trips per day. The three and a half hour ride is an education experience with loadings at a landing near the shops on Dale Road, near the airport. The boat cruises down the Chena River and up the Tanana River past demonstrations that take place on shore, such as a bush plane taking off and landing, fishing cutting in a Native fish camp and a musher’s dog yard. The dog musher in the past has been Susan Butcher’s yard, the four-time Iditarod champion. Finally, the vessel pulls up at the bank for an hour long tour at the mock Athabascan Village.
